Response time: Target: 7 minutes (Category 1). Reality: 8-12 minutes urban, 15-30+ minutes rural. Ambulance handover delays of 30-60+ minutes at hospitals are common.

Healthcare System
The UK's National Health Service (NHS) provides universal healthcare free at the point of use for residents. It is funded through general taxation and is one of the largest single-payer systems in the world. However, the NHS is under severe strain — GP shortages, record A&E waiting times, and long elective care backlogs are significant challenges. Overseas visitors receive free emergency care (A&E) but may be charged for follow-up treatment. Private healthcare runs alongside the NHS, offering faster access at considerable cost. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland operate devolved NHS systems with some policy differences (e.g., free prescriptions).

GP Access & Costs
Must register with a GP practice (free, no ID required). Walk-in urgent care centres available without registration. Private GPs offer same-day access.
Typical wait: Urgent: same day to 48 hours (limited slots). Routine: 2-4 weeks. Many practices use online triage (eConsult, Accurx) — submit symptoms at 8am for callback.
Availability: Severe GP shortage nationwide — many practices closed to new patients, especially in deprived areas. Use NHS.uk "Find a GP" tool. If refused registration, contact NHS England for help. Walk-in centres and urgent care centres don't require registration.

ER Without Insurance

Medication
England: £9.90 per prescription item (Prepayment Certificate: £31.25/3 months or £111.60/year for unlimited). Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland: ALL prescriptions free. Many exemptions (under 16, over 60, pregnant, low income).
Pharmacy & Medication
Hours: Mon–Sat 9am–6pm typical. Late-night pharmacies in cities open until 10-11pm. Boots, Superdrug, Lloyds widely available. NHS Pharmacy First service allows pharmacists to treat 7 common conditions directly.
OTC: Pharmacists can supply many medications without prescription including low-dose codeine, antihistamines, emergency contraception (Levonorgestrel), and hydrocortisone cream. NHS Pharmacy First scheme (England) lets pharmacists prescribe for UTIs, shingles, impetigo, and more.
Controlled substances: Strong opioids (codeine 30mg+, tramadol), benzodiazepines, and ADHD medications (methylphenidate, lisdexamfetamine) require UK prescription. Travellers should carry a doctor's letter listing medications, doses, and medical necessity. Cannabis is illegal regardless of prescription status in other countries.
